Flavours of Fall Smoothie Part 1: Recipes

FallSmoothieGuide.jpg

Don't doubt fall my friends! This time of year offers plenty of in season vegetables and fruits that create some incredibly warming flavours when perfectly combined. Say goodbye to your summer smoothie staples like bananas and coconut - and hello to your new best friends like fall squash, late season stone fruits and berries and warming spices like nutmeg, allspice, cloves and cinnamon.

In Paleolithic times, your primal ancestors ate with the seasons. Obviously because they had to but also because nature provided a perfectly synchronized growth and harvest of different foods and herbs for them to forage seasonally that catered to their bodies' physical needs and demands.

For example in the spring to early summer months grow leafy greens, bitter and astringent herbs and sulphur-rich vegetables. These greens are rich in minerals and they hold a lot of water to help restore our nutrient levels and rehydrate our bodies. The sulphur-rich cruciferous vegetables and astringent herbs that grow during this time help us to detoxify our organ systems and rid of winter weight. Late summer and early fall yields many fresh berries, stone fruits, melons, starchy squashes and root vegetables, as well as immune supporting herbs like garlic and echinacea. These high sugar fruits and starches helped to prepare our bodies for the colder months.

In keeping with the theme of eating with the seasons I have created 6 smoothie recipes featuring only whole foods that are in season through these falls months in the Pacific West Coast. Follow the recipes or simply use this as a tool to shop for which seasonal vegetables and fruits you can take home from your local farmers market to also eat seasonally and sustainably.
